Application analysis of RFID technology in elderly health care

  RFID technology application status

Generally speaking, after entering old age, physiologically it will show the characteristics of metabolic slowdown, decreased resistance, and decreased physiological functions. This is a natural law, so the cognitive decline of the elderly is difficult to reverse. Elderly people often forget where to place items, forget to bring keys when they go out, confusion in financial management, inconvenience in movement, confusion in thinking, communication difficulties, more physical emergencies, and less time for diagnosis. In order to solve these problems, many smart technology companies have developed application systems such as personnel positioning, emergency help, identity authentication, case management, item management, entrance and exit management, access control management, and consumption management. The RFID system for the elderly usually consists of four parts: smart tags, sensing devices, support modules, and application systems.

RFID smart tags can be divided into low frequency (Low Frequency), high frequency (High Frequency), ultra high frequency (Ultra High Frequency), and microwave (Microwave) according to the technical characteristics of different frequency bands. It can also be classified into passive RFID products, active RFID products, and semi-active RFID products. Semi-active RFID products, combined with the advantages of active RFID products and passive RFID products, under the trigger of low-frequency 125KHZ frequency, let microwave 2.45G, 433M, WIFI play its advantages, and composite a 13.56M high-frequency card for All-in-one card should be the most extensive in the existing pension and health care system. Semi-active RFID technology, which can also be called low-frequency activation trigger technology, uses low-frequency short-range precise positioning, microwave long-distance identification and data upload to solve the functions that pure active RFID and passive RFID cannot achieve. Simply put, it is to activate positioning at a short distance, identify and upload data at a long distance. These tags are made into a wristband or pendant type, which is convenient to wear. ISO/IEC has formulated air interface protocols in five frequency bands to standardize the information interaction between RFID induction devices and smart tags.

  Smart community management diagram

RFID induction equipment is often installed in the identification area, such as the door of the elderly apartment, the ceiling of the building, the outdoor column of the elderly community, etc., to identify the smart label information in a certain area, for identity authentication and positioning, and to receive Information is transmitted to the background through the support system.

The support module and the application module mainly collect and analyze the sensing device and tag data, further process it, and provide a docking interface for people to use. They are the core of the elderly health care system. The wristband (pendant) tag can intermittently send information to the sensing equipment in the area, and send real-time dynamics to its management center. Once the information of the elderly is not uploaded to the system management center, an alarm will be issued and the staff can view the previous The activity trajectory of the stage, and timely handling of emergencies. RFID tags are basically equipped with emergency call SOS function. When the elderly need help, just press the emergency call button on the RFID tag, and the nursing staff can accurately locate based on GIS, respond quickly, and implement help. If an elderly person has an illness, the system can quickly call up the elderly's case, health record, and life record according to the situation, and provide the necessary information to deal with such an emergency. Starting the SOS alarm function will also activate the video surveillance system, control the cameras in the corresponding area, switch to the specified direction, display the scene screen, and provide the management personnel with accurate video information. There are elderly people who need special care. The management staff uses the system to record and distribute to all caregivers. The caregivers can read the tags of the elderly through the RFID sensing device they wear with them to facilitate personalized services. In addition to the above applications, it also includes all-in-one card functions, such as apartment access control, community restaurants, entertainment and fitness venues identity authentication

At present, most of the RFID tags worn by the elderly are one-way uploading of data, and are limited to the functions of asking for help, personnel positioning, and all-in-one cards, and do not realize the active event reminder function. The price of passive UHF 900M induction equipment remains high, the power supply problem of the active 2.4G electronic tag, the overweight problem of the tag itself, the lack of industry standards, and the excessive number of indoor radio frequency equipment may cause the electromagnetic spectrum to be very crowded. Sensing devices frequently read tags repeatedly, occupying communication channels and server resources, some radio frequency signals may be absorbed by the human body or blocked by metal objects, how to assign alarm signals to appropriate medical institutions, the impact of wireless signal radiation on the body of the elderly, etc. It is a thorny, practical problem that hinders the application of RFID technology in elderly health care. Therefore, if RFID tags can be integrated with health-related wearable devices, it will provide more help to the elderly.

The intelligent system combined with RFID technology provides important support for the independent life of the elderly, can help the elderly solve various problems in daily life, and improve the self-confidence of the elderly in independent living. However, all systems have some limitations. This urgently requires the participation of large-scale professional technology companies and related industry experts, the need to formulate equipment docking standards, the need to reduce system costs, and the need for technological development and legal regulations to further explore the application of RFID technology in elderly healthcare And research to provide support.
