The old saying goes well, "I don’t see, I don’t know." Indeed, this is especially true for construction materials that are not easily visible or completely hidden. Blueprints or architectural drawings are just blueprints, and sometimes things on paper may not work in reality. The change is only a little bit, and the change is not always recorded. Take the cables and pipes in a few acres of campus, or the routes and connections of the local area network, or the actual depth and path of the fiber optic cables in the building. Arranging these "infrastructure assets" can be said to be a real challenge. . And RFID technology can be regarded as a real "reliable asset".
should be widely known but may not actually be known is that certain RF frequencies will react differently to ambiguous materials. Low-frequency RF signals, due to their longer wavelength, are less affected by covering materials such as dirt, paint or even cement, and are not susceptible to liquids in high-frequency RF signals. This makes low-frequency RFID tags well used to mark and identify items buried in the ground or embedded in walls.
This is not to say that HF and UHF RFID tags cannot be used. When using fuzzy materials as acoustic ceiling tiles, it is better to use these frequencies.
We have sorted out several major terrestrial RFID applications for readers' reference. Here, RFID technology can provide the construction engineering industry with benefits that other technologies cannot.
1. Underground application
On many construction sites, various pipes and cables run in the same tunnel. Adjacent tunnels need to be safe (RFID radio frequency bulletin note: such as separating gasoline from electrical appliances). At this time, special underground tags can be used to identify underground objects and connected nodes or controls, with a reading range of about eight feet. Put the tag in the tunnel, whether for maintenance, repair or just to avoid excavation errors, the underground part of the infrastructure can be accurately located.
For some contacts and controls, such as valves, switch positions, etc., sensors can also be added to the tag for identification, without digging or opening the contacts.
2. Concrete curing
Sensor RFID tags embedded on pre-compressed or cast-in-place concrete can provide construction companies with real-time and accurate information about cement.
Pre-compressed concrete beams and other structural components must be fully cured before being pressed. If the pressure is too early, it is easy to crack or collapse prematurely. If the waiting time is too long, it will take up valuable space in the conservation area, which is not conducive to sales.
In the application of cast-in-place concrete, construction companies need to accurately predict the condition of the cement. Especially for large or tall buildings, timing is very important. The company is currently using sensors and RFID tags to determine the relative number of "setups" in specific areas, and then promote them. This ensures proper bonding of the different "casting joints".
3. Wiring
Any building is a labyrinth of wires, cables, pipes and ducts. Even the most modern buildings must constantly upgrade their electrical appliances, telephones, data, and HVAC systems. Using RFID technology can accelerate the location of specific materials in a non-invasive way. This can greatly simplify the maintenance, repair, and upgrade process by accurately identifying the wiring without moving many ceiling tiles, reading faded handwritten labels, or relying on potentially inaccurate wiring/piping/HVAC diagrams.
4. Segmentation/Scheduling
Any major construction site, before using materials for construction, these materials need to be arranged in sub-zones. Although these materials are not necessarily "out of sight"-tracking them can be a challenge because they are often hidden among dozens or hundreds of similar components.
RFID tags can identify the main structural parts and heating/ventilating/air conditioning (HVAC) components, control devices and other items that must be placed in a specific location. The readers on lift trucks and other equipment can read the tags in the area where the materials are placed to ensure quick retrieval and confirm the correct materials are selected.
5. Other applications
Obviously, there are other applications of RFID in construction, but they are not part of the "out of sight" mode-such as personnel identity, time and attendance, tool tracking, vehicle and yard control, cargo reception, and so on. In fact, many RFID "hidden" applications can inspire us to think about other ways to use RFID for fuzzy materials.
