Application of uhf rfid technology in waste management system

For more than a decade, Compta has been using RFID systems to track nearly 250,000 containers used by customers in multiple European cities. The system uses low frequency (LF) technology, and is captured and managed by a variety of technological processes and software systems. Compata's system engineer Sérgio Spinola said that the company is looking for a more perfect solution to make the management of the trash can easier, and to make its management information more concise and clear on all customers' systems. Therefore, in the past 5 years, the company has been committed to researching and deploying a solution based on UHF technology that can be commonly used in the entire customer base. Using UHF technology, the reader can capture the tag ID number at a distance of several meters. Compared with LF RFID technology, UHF technology allows staff to obtain and input tag data more quickly and easily.

Mike Cui, TechSigno’s international technical support manager, said that users who use UHF solutions will affix ready-made UHF RFID tags to the trash can when they distribute the trash can to each customer’s site. Then read the tag through the RFID handheld mobile terminal, and connect the unique ID number of the tag with the customer data.

It is said that this handheld mobile terminal device can not only read UHF tags, but also complete one-dimensional and two-dimensional barcode scanning, and can send data through 4G network or WiFi connection. The device can not only detect its GPS location, but also connect the customer's data information such as name and address to the tag ID number when reading the tag. In this way, the operator can quickly associate one or more trash bins to a specific location.

The garbage collection truck is equipped with an RFID reader fixed on the garbage can, which can automatically track when and where each garbage can is emptied. When the trash can is dumped, the reader will capture its tag ID number, and the wireless device on the truck will also send the data to the system software along with the GPS location through the network connection.

Spinola said that in some cases, garbage collectors will also use handheld mobile terminal devices. For example, on the island of São Miguel in the Azores, Portugal, garbage collectors use a handheld mobile terminal device to capture the ID number of the RFID tag every time they empties the garbage bin, thereby confirming the garbage through the GPS data on the handheld device Whether the box has been emptied and whether it is in the proper position.
