RFID technology comparison: passive vs active
RFID technology can be divided into two main types according to whether the tag has its own power supply: passive or active.
"Passive RFID" is an RFID tag without a battery. In order for passive RFID solutions to work, passive RFID tags must take power from a powered RFID reader to send location data back to the reader. The reader then sends the tag data to the customer's database or cloud, and stores it there. Customers may analyze this data in software programs or smartphone applications.
One of the advantages of passive RFID is cost control. Because it does not use batteries, the pricing of passive RFID tags can be as low as one dollar in large quantities. Even those powerful and rugged tags can be controlled at about $20. The most basic market price of active RFID tags is usually more than $20.
