How much do you know about mobile NFC technology

In August last year, the Beijing subway began to support mobile phone rides on all lines. Users only need to activate Beijing's municipal transportation card to swipe their mobile phones to enter stations. This function is developed in conjunction with the mobile phone’s NFC function.

At the beginning of this century, when people were still focusing on the various additional functions of mobile phones at the communication level, the new payment concept of mobile payment has entered China, which not only changed the traditional "identity" given to mobile phones by people, but also Subvert people's traditional concept of payment means and payment methods. The application of NFC technology on mobile phones makes mobile payment possible, and this technology is especially popular among young people.

At present, the most widely used NFC is the mobile phone subway ticket as mentioned above. After testing this technology in many regions, including Guangzhou, my country, it has been widely praised. The convenient operation process will make it possible that NFC technology will eventually replace the subway IC truck ticket scheme.

  NFC Near Field Communication Technology

NFC Near Field Communication (NFC), also known as Near Field Communication, is a short-distance high-frequency wireless communication technology that allows non-contact point-to-point data transmission (within ten centimeters) exchange between electronic devices data. This technology evolved from contactless radio frequency identification (RFID) and is backward compatible with RFID. It was first successfully developed by Sony and Philips. It is mainly used to provide M2M (Machine to Machine) communication in handheld devices such as mobile phones. Due to the natural security of near field communication, NFC technology is considered to have great application prospects in fields such as mobile payment.

The NFC chip has the function of mutual communication and calculation capability. The Felica standard also contains an encryption logic circuit, and the later standard of MIFARE also adds an encryption/decryption module (SAM).

The NFC standard is compatible with Sony’s FeliCaTM standard, and ISO 14443 A, B, which uses Philips’ MIFARE standard. In the industry, they are referred to as TypeA, TypeB and TypeF, where A and B are Mifare standards, and F is Felica standards.

In order to promote the development and popularization of NFC, the industry has created a non-profit standards organization-the NFC Forum, to promote the implementation and standardization of NFC technology, and to ensure collaboration and cooperation between equipment and services. At present, the NFC Forum has hundreds of members around the world, including: SONY, Phlips, LG, Motorola, NXP, NEC, Samsung, atoam, Intel, and Chinese members include China Mobile, Huawei, ZTE, Shanghai Tongyao and Taiwan Zhenglong, etc. company.

  NFC technical characteristics

Like RFID, NFC information is also transmitted through electromagnetic induction coupling in the wireless frequency part of the spectrum, but there is still a big difference between the two. First of all, NFC is a wireless connection technology that provides easy, safe, and rapid communication. Its transmission range is smaller than that of RFID. The transmission range of RFID can reach several meters or even tens of meters. However, due to the unique signal attenuation technology adopted by NFC, Compared with RFID, NFC has the characteristics of short distance, high bandwidth, and low energy consumption. Secondly, NFC is compatible with existing contactless smart card technology and has now become an official standard supported by more and more major manufacturers. Thirdly, NFC is a short-distance connection protocol that provides easy, safe, fast and automatic communication between various devices. Compared with other connection methods in the wireless world, NFC is a close-range private communication method. Finally, RFID is more used in production, logistics, tracking, and asset management, while NFC plays a huge role in fields such as access control, public transportation, and mobile payment.

NFC, infrared, and Bluetooth are all non-contact transmission methods. They have their own different technical characteristics and can be used for various purposes. There is no difference between the advantages and disadvantages of the technology itself.

NFC-enabled devices can exchange data in active or passive mode. In the passive mode, the device that initiates the NFC communication, also called the NFC initiating device (master device), provides a radio frequency field (RF-field) during the entire communication process, as shown in Figure 2. It can select a transmission speed of 106kbps, 212kbps or 424kbps to send data to another device. The other device is called the NFC target device (slave device), which does not need to generate a radio frequency field, but uses load modulation (load modulation) technology, that is, it can transmit data back to the initiating device at the same speed. This communication mechanism is compatible with contactless smart cards based on ISO14443A, MIFARE and FeliCa. Therefore, in passive mode, the NFC initiator can use the same connection and initialization process to detect and establish contact with the contactless smart card or NFC target device. .

Figure 1: NFC active communication mode

In the active mode, each device must generate its own radio frequency field when sending data to another device. As shown in Figure 1, both the initiating device and the target device must generate their own radio frequency fields for communication. This is the standard mode of peer-to-peer network communication, and you can get very fast connection settings.
