How to choose RFID antenna in warehouse logistics management?

The RFID system is mainly composed of a tag (Tag), a reader (Reader) and an antenna (Antenna). It is mainly to realize the process of data collection. These three together determine the actual effect of the RFID system. The design of the read-write antenna determines the reading The read and write range of the writer and whether the tag can be activated, so the RFID read and write antenna plays a pivotal role in the entire system. In the field of warehousing and logistics, electronic tags are used to bind goods, and signals are transmitted to the system through antennas and readers to form automated data collection.

When it comes to UHF reader antennas, we often don’t know how to choose antennas in project applications. The usual thinking is to use Laird’s antennas. I think imported brands are definitely reliable, but we don’t think about whether it is suitable for the project environment. , In the project, string reading, misreading, and low recognition rate are the most common problems and the most troublesome problems for users. These problems can actually be solved by the antenna (field).

The most important points for selecting an antenna are: polarization direction, antenna gain, beam angle, working frequency band, mechanical size, application environment, etc. Then, in warehousing and logistics projects, the RFID antennas we will use include narrow-beam antennas, forklift antennas, and handheld antennas (an indispensable part of RFID handheld terminal reading and writing equipment).

  1. RFID narrow beam antenna

Access control systems are all used in warehousing and logistics management. The functions that need to be realized are in and out inventory, anti-theft, area positioning, etc. The most common problem in projects is misreading. The access control is installed at the door, and the shelf in the warehouse is probably away from the door. At a distance of one meter, the antenna usually reads the tag on the shelf. In similar projects, the selected antenna must be a circularly polarized narrow-beam antenna. Because the tag direction is messy, the antenna polarization is very important. It is a narrow beam antenna, because the door management is to make the radiation on the left and right sides as narrow as possible, so as to ensure that the tags in the warehouse are not misread. Under the condition of the same power, the common antenna can read the tags 3 meters away. , And the narrow-wave antenna can be controlled to the peripheral reading within 1 meter. The other advantage of the narrow-wave antenna is that the horizontal beam is narrow and the vertical beam is wide, so that the goods can be recognized normally when the pile is high. It is a good solution to misreading, string Reading and other issues.

  2. RFID forklift antenna

Forklifts are usually used in warehousing and logistics management. The carrier for forklifts to transport goods is mainly pallets. The forklift management system using RFID technology is achieved by installing UHF RFID readers and UHF RFID antennas on the forklift. It forms an RFID reading system with an industrial control computer, and then uses RFID tags on the pallets of goods, so that when forklifts equipped with RFID reading systems pick up the pallets, they can obtain the RFID tag data to confirm the goods information, complete Accurate management of goods in and out of warehouse, goods transfer, and cargo space in warehousing and logistics. In actual scenarios, circularly polarized antennas are usually used, because the direction of the pallet tags is not necessarily uniform, and due to the particularity of forklift work, the RFID reader and antenna must be strong and stable, so the RFID antenna shell material needs Waterproof, dustproof and shockproof.

  3. RFID handset antenna

RFID handheld terminal reading and writing equipment will be used in warehousing and logistics management projects, which are mainly used for the inbound inventory of goods, materials on the shelves, inventory counting, materials out of the warehouse, and retrieval and query links. The RFID handset antenna is an indispensable part of the handheld terminal. The selection and pros and cons of the antenna directly determine the read and write performance of the entire terminal device. At present, the most widely used handheld antennas on the market are mainly ceramic antennas and PCB antennas, and the size requires miniaturization. Since the dielectric constant of the ceramic itself is higher than that of the PCB circuit board, the use of ceramic antennas can effectively reduce the size of the antenna . And in terms of dielectric loss, the ceramic medium is also smaller than the dielectric loss of the pcb circuit board, so the ceramic antenna is more suitable for use in the RFID handheld terminal reader.

In layman's terms, the antenna is a passive middleware, which is converted into electromagnetic waves by the reader's transmitting power and emitted by the antenna. After receiving the tag information, the electromagnetic waves are returned. It has no great mystery, it is just a transmitting and receiving component, but it is indispensable in the use of RFID! Broadwei smart RFID antenna experts tell you: a good antenna is not only easy to achieve the expected design purpose, but also simplifies the originally complicated work! In this step of RFID antenna selection, it is recommended to consult a professional RFID company to obtain the best system integration effect.
