Each company must determine the model of the reader based on its position in the supply chain, as well as the purpose and location of the RFID reader. Choosing the right UHF reader is critical to the successful implementation of other tasks. If the reader is selected reasonably, a lot of costs can be reduced. For example, when buying a reader, using a large-volume and small-batch purchase method will save money compared to a small-batch and multi-batch purchase method.
1. Cost budget
You must calculate all the costs that need to be invested. In addition to the equipment costs, the server, tags, and software costs should all be included in the installation fee. In addition, many users have to install a power supply in order to supply power to the reader. Before purchasing an RFID reader, many considerations must be made. There is no doubt that buying a simple reader will save a lot of cost, but with the upgrade of application software, the simple reader will be replaced by a smart reader. Before buying a reader, what data the reader needs to collect should also be tested, and consider the RFID technology used by other users in the supply chain. In addition, it is also necessary to consider when to purchase goods with RFID tags and which protocol is used for the tags used. 3. Frequency
The operating frequency of UHF tags is 860MHz-960 MHz. Because of their long reading distance, they are widely used in the supply chain. However, due to the HF tag (working frequency is 13.56 MHz), the performance is better in a short distance, and the influence of water and metal on it is also small. In this way, when buying a reader, you must also consider whether you need to buy a reader with mixed frequencies.
If you want to read both HF tag information and UHF tag information, then you need to consider whether to purchase both H reader and UHF reader, or just buy a mixed frequency reader Device. Although many reader manufacturers only produce UHF readers, it is not difficult for us to buy mixed frequency readers. Since most of the supply chain application software works under UHF frequency, UHF readers should be the main choice for the purchase of readers, and HF readers should be purchased when necessary. This is because it is cheaper to buy a single frequency reader than to buy a mixed frequency reader.
When users develop a global RFID deployment plan, they must ensure that the selected readers can work in different regions of the world. Because the working frequencies of RFID in the world are not exactly the same, the working frequency of UHF readers in Europe is 865-868MHz, in North America it is 902-928MHz, and in Japan it is 950-956MHz.
4. Antenna
Need to consider what type of antenna to install on the fixed reader and the number of installed antennas, the fixed reader has either an internal antenna or multiple antenna interfaces for installing external antennas. Readers with different forms of antennas can be used universally. The advantage of a fixed reader with an internal antenna is that it is easy to install. In addition, the signal is less attenuated during the transmission from the reader to the antenna. However, under the same circumstances, the number of internal antenna readers is more than the number of external antenna readers.
5. The choice of network
Many newly installed readers are generally connected to a local area network or a wide area network via Ethernet or Wi-Fi. The wireless connection reduces the installation difficulty and also saves the installation cost, because it does not need to lay a large number of cables. Hand-held readers either need to download data to the PC in a wired way or wirelessly.
6. Upgrade to Gen2
In order for the first-generation reader to read Gen2 tag information, the firmware of the first-generation tag must be upgraded. In order to make full use of the advantages of Gen2 tags, it is best to upgrade the hardware of the first generation of readers. If you want to buy a reader before the second-generation scribbling device is put on the market, then you should ask the manufacturer whether the hardware can be upgraded as necessary, and whether the firmware can be upgraded remotely via the network.
