Is RFID a new hope for wearable devices?

Radio frequency identification (RFID) tags have become a key component of global commerce, allowing stakeholders to track physical assets quickly and reliably. If deployed properly, tags can be used in new wearable devices to track physical movement and shape changes.

Carnegie Mellon University (Carnegie Mellon University, CMU) researchers have found a way to control using RFID tags. Haojian Jin, a doctoral student at CMU Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCII), said: “By attaching these paper-like RFID tags to clothes, we can prove that it can track bones with millimeter accuracy. "

RFID tags work by reflecting certain frequencies. RFID tags are cheap, do not require batteries, and can be cleaned, which makes them very attractive to developers. If you want to design a method that uses multiple RFID tags to track movement, the easiest way is to use multiple antennas to track backscatter to triangulate the position.

CMU researchers did not use this method, but instead used a single mobile antenna to track the signal time difference. For example, when backscatter returns signals from multiple tags embedded in clothing, the subtle signal time difference from one sensor to another can be used to calculate the movement and shape changes of the object.

Clothing embedded with RFID can replace sports tracking devices like Fitbit. Wang said: “We can turn any soft surface in the environment into a touch screen.” A CMU spokesperson said, for example, smart carpets can detect the presence and location of people, or be used to control games or equipment.

A CMU spokesperson said: "Soft toys can respond to or record squeezing and bending, and smart pillows may help track sleep quality." RFID can also monitor important infrastructure. For example, CMU researchers measured the curvature of the Pittsburgh Bridge by dragging a string of RFID tags. Jin said: "We are changing the way people think about RF sensing."

On average, these tags cost less than a dollar. Most smart phones currently cannot read 900 MHz RFID applications, but the inclusion of this feature in future mobile phones can provide a cheap alternative to expensive wearable sensors.
