New equipment realizes ultra-low cost RFID inlay
PragmatIC recently announced a strategic cooperation with Smooth & Sharp Corporation (S&S), a supplier of RFID inlays and manufacturing tools, which will accelerate the adoption of PragmatIC flexible integrated circuits (FlexICs).
S&S has experience in designing traditional silicon inlay manufacturing equipment, and they have applied this equipment to a new type of flip chip for flexible chips. This new machine produces 4,200 parts per hour, providing the lowest upfront cost for assembling flexible parts on paper or plastic inserts.
This new machine was not only demonstrated with traditional aluminum antennas, but also produced a series of antennas using flexo, inkjet and screen printing techniques. They claim that the availability of printed electronics solutions further reduces the cost barriers for RFID inlays.
This cost change, coupled with the thin, flexible and robust features of FlexICs, opens up the potential for consumer product brands to rapidly adopt and expand new smart packaging solutions based on RFID and NFC functions.
