RFID technology allows baggage to "speak", and China Eastern Airlines intends to realize baggage tracking within this year

In the face of the ever-increasing growth of luggage in the future, how to deliver luggage to the destination accurately and accurately, to better enhance the passenger experience, and at the same time make airlines less burdened? Recently, at the IATA North Asia Regional Airport and Passenger Experience Seminar, this topic has attracted the attention of many people.
Trend: Baggage tracking is imperative
SITA (International Aeronautics and Telecommunications Association) has conducted a survey, which pointed out that in all aspects of air travel, the number of passengers who are happy in the baggage claim scene is the least, at 75%. The survey results also show that if the baggage claim time is controlled to 10 minutes or less, 88% of passengers will be in a good mood, but if the waiting time reaches 30 minutes or longer, the number of happy passengers will drop to 54%. This is indeed the case. According to the annual consumer complaints of the Civil Aviation Administration of China, baggage complaints are ranked after flight problems and ticketing problems, and are the third most complained by passengers.
More and more passengers are showing keen interest in receiving baggage check notifications and management related behaviors. A recent survey showed that in the list of frequently used mobile services for passengers, luggage services ranked third among the top six items. The number one service among the top three is undoubtedly the latest baggage notification. 79% of passengers said they would definitely use it. The second is to report mishandled baggage via mobile phone (67%), and the third is to receive baggage claim notifications (65%), such as baggage carousel number and waiting time.
From this point of view, quick checked baggage and the feeling that everything is under control are undoubtedly the key factors to improve the satisfaction of passengers in the baggage link. This is similar to online shopping, the whole process of order tracking can not only greatly alleviate consumers' anxiety, but also allows consumers to take timely action when there is a problem with luggage transportation.
In fact, not only passengers, airlines also have an urgent need for faster and safer baggage handling. Cui Yan, passenger experience and facilitation project manager for IATA North Asia, said, “The mishandling and damage of luggage has long been a major pain point in the aviation industry. In 2017, 22.7 million pieces of luggage were mishandled globally, bringing about A huge loss of $2.3 billion."
Based on the long-standing difficulties and pain points of the aviation industry, IATA Resolution No. 753 requires member airlines to track baggage at the four key points of passenger baggage transportation (baggage delivery, installation, transfer, and arrival). At the same time, information sharing and data exchange should be carried out between the interline airlines for the traced passenger baggage information. At the same time, IATA revised Resolution 754, adding "baggage tracking records" as a basis.

Technology: RFID came into being
In recent years, with the investment of advanced technology, passengers are more and more satisfied with the air transport baggage service. An important reason for this is the widespread use of radio frequency identification (RFID) technology.
In my country, the Civil Aviation Administration also attaches great importance to RFID. At the beginning of this year, the National Civil Aviation Work Conference proposed to promote the construction of the baggage tracking system, formulate the "Guidelines for the Construction of the National Civil Aviation Baggage Tracking System", promote the application of RFID and other technologies, and encourage airports with more than tens of millions of dollars to use "Aircraft" to realize passengers Full-process tracking of baggage.
The basic principle of RFID is to track objects through radio waves. Unlike barcodes, RFID does not require a reading device (scanner) to face the target, which means that the use of RFID can obtain great flexibility and accuracy. Currently, airlines use a barcode label system to identify which flight the passenger’s luggage is loaded onto, but the barcode system can only read 8-9 pieces of luggage correctly. This means that airlines have to continuously invest a lot of time and energy in manual operations to transport the sorted baggage to different flights. The accuracy of RFID sorting far exceeds that of the barcode system. In a test of 40,000 pieces of luggage, the accuracy of reading luggage with RFID tags reached 96.7%. In addition to real-time baggage tracking, baggage tracking can also effectively reduce baggage fraud or detect theft in the system, speed up flight preparation, and reduce flight delays.

Thanks to the above advantages, companies including Qantas, Lufthansa, and Delta Airlines have also tried to use RFID technology. Delta Air Lines has stated that the initial deployment of radio frequency identification can ensure that people successfully track 99.9% of luggage. Earlier related statistics show that if all airports in the world adopt baggage handling systems based on RFID technology, the aviation industry can save US$760 million a year.
Challenge: Need for the full cooperation of civil aviation
However, in China, there are still relatively few applications using RFID technology to track luggage. At the beginning of this year, China Eastern launched the first RFID baggage tracking system in the domestic civil aviation industry, first on its Hongqiao-Wuhan route. At present, this technology has been promoted in major domestic airports such as Pudong, Hongqiao, Kunming, and Xi'an, and the number of tracked luggage accounts for 80.16% of the total domestic luggage transportation. China Eastern Airlines stated that after the implementation of the baggage tracking project, the proportion of mishandled baggage has been reduced by 16%, and the corresponding cost has been reduced by 10%. Passengers can scan or enter their luggage tag number in the WeChat applet "China Eastern Airlines" just like checking express delivery, and they can learn about the status of checked baggage in real time and enjoy the convenient and secure service brought by high technology.
However, because the infrastructure of each airport is slightly different, different airlines use different ways, which also causes the application of RFID technology in the country to still face many challenges. For example, various parties such as airports and airlines have different demands. The parallel use of multiple devices and systems in the same usage scenario not only cannot achieve data compatibility, but it is also a kind of repeated investment. In terms of data, information islands are also a difficult point for people in the civil aviation industry to focus on. From the current point of view, airlines, airport baggage system suppliers, departure system suppliers, etc. all have only partial baggage tracking data, which cannot be effectively completed with each other. data sharing.
It can be said that the landing and implementation of baggage tracking is a very complicated process, which not only requires some adjustments and improvements in technology, processes, facilities, equipment, etc., but also requires the cooperation of all aspects of the entire civil aviation system. The relevant person in charge of China Eastern Airlines suggested that “the whole baggage tracking should first strengthen the top-level design, through the formulation of China’s civil aviation standards and construction plans, provide RFID implementation guidelines, and further clarify the responsibilities and obligations of each unit throughout the process; secondly, it is necessary to strengthen the industry’s co-construction and sharing. With the goal of improving the service experience of air passengers, we will fully share data, technology, and solutions to encourage the participation of all links in the industry; finally, we must accelerate the upgrading of RFID technology, further reduce product costs, and further expand the utility of RFID technology."
Zhang Qijun from the Second Civil Aviation Research Institute also holds a similar view. In his opinion, “While realizing the automatic collection of baggage tracking data, it is necessary to build a foundation for resource sharing. At the same time, it is necessary to ensure the advancement of technology and adapt to the future. The technological development trend of intelligent and unmanned baggage handling business."
From the perspective of passengers, the key to this kind of baggage tracking lies in the acquisition of information. They hope to be able to check their baggage information at any time through a website or an APP. It is worth mentioning that, in addition to sensing technology, some startup companies are starting from the luggage of passengers, designing electronic luggage tag functions, and even passengers can track their luggage at any time on an APP. However, the question they face is whether such suitcases are allowed to be sent on the plane.
The good news is that within this year, China Eastern plans to implement real-time baggage tracking based on RFID technology at the hub site of Beijing Daxing International Airport, and will simultaneously cover all domestic branches and company terminals. In the future, more airports will implement RFID technology-based, accurate collection of the entire process data of luggage transportation, so that passengers with checked luggage can better enjoy the convenience and peace of mind brought by high-tech services.
