When DHL decided to upgrade its 434,000-square-foot cold storage facility at Chicago O’Hare International Airport, the company not only focused on maintaining the temperature in the facility, but also ensuring that these temperatures are maintained during all parts of the delivery cycle.

DHL has deployed new technologies (and old technologies used in new, more common ways), which are becoming more and more common in cold chain warehouses, whether it is tracking temperature when importing and exporting by life science companies, DHL does it at this place, or make sure the ice cream in your Instacart order will stay cool before it reaches your front door.

The powerful function of RFID in the cold chain environment

Passive and active RFID are not new technologies, but their prices have dropped very low and their functions have been greatly increased, so that they are more practical in more places, John Bruno, vice president of product management at Elastic Path, told Supply Chain Dive in an interview Shi said.

RFID can complete all operations from track equipment performance to the location of items in the storage warehouse. The technology can also help improve energy efficiency because no one needs to open objects or coolers to check the internal conditions. Bruno said: "You don't have to turn on and off these things and lift the temperature control."

This is the case in the upgraded DHL warehouse, which uses RFID readers throughout the building and uses RFID tags for every shipment. DHL customers can know the “exact location of all items entering the building, whether as an import or an export,” Phil Steffen, DHL’s global commercial director for the same day delivery, told Supply Chain Dive in an interview. "We can accurately determine the location of this cargo at any time."

DHL also deploys data loggers that record the temperature throughout the delivery cycle by using near field communication data, making the warehouse a hub for tracking freight. DHL places a small bag with DHL smart sensors on the outside of the goods, enabling customers to track the temperature, humidity, impact, brightness and location from the warehouse to the final location.

"Our customers can see very quickly what temperature exposure their goods have," Steffen said, so they can know whether these temperatures exceed the packaging temperature level, DHL can step in and alleviate this situation. Then, through the technical customers put their goods, they can judge through the portal whether their products are within the appropriate temperature range.

RFID is also ideal for sub-zero cold chain warehouses where scanners are atomized. The RFID system can create a "scanning-free environment," John Sidell, the managing director of New Course Group, told Supply Chain Dive in an interview.
