Will chips hinder the development of China's RFID industry?
The ZTE chip incident ushered in an outbreak of the long-fermented Chinese chip crisis. The author couldn't help but start to think about whether the RFID industry that I have been paying attention to for a long time also has the same crisis?
RFID is an exotic product that has attracted waves of entrepreneurs to enter the RFID industry. Through the dissemination and popularization of RFID application knowledge by enterprises in these years, industry users have basically realized the huge advantages of RFID. At the same time, since the 1990s, China has passed countless hurdles and achieved gratifying results on the long march of RFID chip localization.
As a core IoT sensing technology, RFID has received widespread attention and investment from global technology giants. Chinese chip companies also joined the battle for the first time. The Chinese "chip" in the HF RFID field has become the pride of the domestic RFID industry, but we must also see that UHF RFID chips are not satisfactory.
Looking back at the early days of UHF RFID entering the Chinese market (approximately between 2005 and 2008), RFID companies and brands in various industries were fighting for the rapid implementation of the technology. Perhaps at that time, everyone’s awareness of UHF chip localization was not strong enough. Therefore, the manufacturing technology of this UHF RFID chip that is only the size of sand has been controlled by American Impinger and Alien Technology (acquired by domestic companies through capital operations a few years ago), and NXP Semiconductors has also started in recent years. work hard.
On the surface, the domestic UHF RFID industry already has electronic label processing giants such as Yongdao, Shangyang, Lixin, Inner, and Cinda, which account for the world's largest total RFID label shipments. However, behind this gratifying achievement The drawbacks of relying on foreign chip procurement. Therefore, the domestic RFID industry as a whole is still in the downstream of the global RFID product industry chain.
Then, someone will ask, does this mean that China's RFID industry is taking "opium"? Of course, the answer is no.
A few days ago, the author had an in-depth exchange with an engineer from a certain domestic chip brand, trying to figure out the root cause of the gap between Chinese RFID chips and foreign chips.
According to the description, the RFID chip industry chain from upstream to downstream can be simply divided into several key links such as design, manufacturing, packaging, equipment, materials, and software. Domestic strength is mainly reflected in the design of RFID chips. Leading brands such as Fudan Microelectronics, Huada Semiconductor and Kunrui Electronics have emerged. The chips they design rely on fabs such as TSMC and SMIC to complete chip manufacturing. And packaging, basically using 130nm or 180nm silicon wafers.
In the words of the engineer, according to China's current R&D capabilities and market size, it is fully capable of making cheap and easy-to-use RFID chips, but the facts seem to ruthlessly veto our beautiful dreams. On the road to localization of RFID chips, in addition to focusing on research and development, we must rely on external forces for this shortcoming of UHF RFID chips. This power comes from "user use", that is, to help us improve the quality of the chip faster through the use of feedback from a large number of users.

In 2008, Shanghai Kunrui successfully independently developed the QR2233 UHF electronic label chip product, and passed the EPCglobal C1 Gen2 compatibility and interoperability dual certification and obtained the authorization certification, confirming that it meets the EPCglobal Gen 2 standard, becoming the fourth in the world and the first in Asia Chip products that have passed the certification. Later, it was used in the largest Wuliangye liquor anti-counterfeiting traceability project in China. By 2010, the cumulative shipment of Kunrui Electronics' (UHF/HF) electronic chips reached 100 million units.
One of the bright spots in this event is "Amount = Win". Therefore, there may not be any shortcuts to the localization of RFID chips, but our company must continue to encourage and even stimulate the use and participation of users. The author is also pleased to learn that several major domestic RFID chip companies have been working hard to realize the localization of RFID chips.
For example: Kailuwei Electronics' unique X-RFID core technology with multiple invention patents in the world, using 100% standard CMOS process to produce RFID tag chips, the product has a unique data retention capacity of more than 100 years, extremely high anti-detection and Anti-tampering ability and excellent cost; Huada Electronics released the first domestic UHF tag chip that supports security algorithms to eliminate the hidden danger of information leakage from the source; Fudan Microelectronics launched PUF (Physical Unclonable Function) physical unclonable technology RFID chip, the random process deviation of the process of injection and illumination during the manufacturing process, produces the unique "fingerprint" information of the chip, which can be used as the unique identification information of the chip after being extracted by special technology.
